Phishing: Am I protected against cybercrime?

Phishing: Ben ik beschermd tegen cybercriminaliteit?

Phishing is a worrying phenomenon in the business world, as a successful phishing attack can have significant consequences for an organization. Financial lossimage damage and disruption of productivity are some examples of this. According to the latest Phishing Activity Trends Report from the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), the APWG found that in the first quarter of 2022, a record total of 1,025,968 phishing attacks has found out. They shared that phishing is not only becoming more common, but also constantly more sophisticated.

What is ''phishing''?

Phishing attacks are designed to trick unwitting victims into giving up sensitive information. For example, cybercriminals use phishing emails to impersonate trusted parties, such as colleagues and well-known institutions. For example, they want to steal personal and banking information or install malware on a computer. Phishing can lead to loss of capital, loss of intellectual property, reputational damage and disruption of operational activities, among other things.

"Many companies do not realize that their executives are being faked on social media. This is a huge business risk.", said John LaCour, Chief Product Strategist at PhishLabs. He noted that impersonation attacks accounted for 47 percent of threats on social media, up 27 percent from the previous quarter. LaCour also shared that phishing is often carried out with business email addresses in mind; unlike most phishing attacks, they are highly targeted and therefore generally more successful. For example, a scammer will take the time to impersonate the email address of an executive at a high-level organization and then send an employee an email with a request.
